Comments:
The Feminist Studies Group, a chartered DSC student-run group, has been planning this conference since January, 2009. We have a full-day roster including 60 panelists on 12 different panels, a keynote speaker, and opening remarks by Professor Victoria Pitts-Taylor. Because we have a full day of events, and many participants, as well as registered attendees, coming from out-of-town, we want to provide resources for all. The Women's Studies Certificate Program and the Feminist Press and co-sponsoring, and we will use their funds, as well as the small support from the Center for Humanities, to pay for many of the basic costs. However, we would use the $700 towards providing a comprehensive experience for participants by offering a lunch, which would give the panelists and speakers an opportunity to sit down and discuss many of the issues raised over the course of the day in an informal setting. We also want to provide a coffee break and a concluding reception so that all attendees, even those not on panels, will have the same opportunity. It is for this reason that we are requesting funds for lunch, as well as coffee and snacks. We feel it is essential to include these social events for informal discussion. We have estimated the costs for these here. The $700 would make a huge impact on our being able to provide all participants in this conference such an experience. The conference is open to all CUNY students free of charge. We have many doctoral students, especially those who adjunct, participating and attending. We see this conference as beneficial to all GC doctoral students on their road towards becoming professional academics.
