Constitution of The Spatial Scholars Group

From cunydsc.org

MISSION: The Spatial Scholars are an interdisciplinary collective at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. This collective grew out of discussions about how space and place (and time) are constructed in both theory and practice. We come from Environmental Psychology, Critical Geography, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Sociology and Urban Studies and welcome scholars with similar foci regardless of disciplinary affiliation. We are especially keen on work that addresses underserved populations, interdisciplinarity, and social justice as they relate to space and place. Our primary purpose is to foster an intellectual and social community of scholars - both faculty and students - who are interacting across programs to engage these issues. Our motto: Struggle Power!

EVENTS:Group meetings feature a broad range of debates and discussions to address various aspects of interdisciplinary and collaborative work.

In addition to these meetings we also hope to organize a regular speaker’s series, occasional events such as film screenings and parties, and a mini-conference. Each event also has a social component, since these events offer an opportunity for those working in various disciplines to come together, network and consider various aspects of professional development in the future.

MEMBERSHIP:We are open to all Graduate Center students and welcome participation from other CUNY faculty and students, as well as those from other institutions. We maintain an online forum of over 25 members and our active participants are currently pursuing interesting work pertinent to a wide range of issues and approaches

Co-Chairs:Two students who are either selected or who volunteer will run the group. There are no formal elections.

Co-Chairs will share the responsibilities of scheduling and running regular meetings, organizing events, and applying for funding.
