What is a Cultural Affairs Grant?
It is a Doctoral Students Council initiative intended to support cultural events organized by Graduate Center students. The event must be open - though not restricted to - all Graduate Center students. The grants may fund a wide range of projects, including student-organized conferences, lectures, or publications. The purpose of these grants is to allow the DSC grant recipient(s):
- to publish cultural and academic materials
- to conduct cultural events open to all students at the Graduate Center
Who can apply for this grant?
Only Graduate Center Students:
- Individual students registered at the Graduate Center
- Departmental organizations
- Student organizations chartered by the DSC
- Ad hoc groups of students registered at the Graduate Center
What is the purpose of these grants?
To allow the DSC grant recipient(s):
- to publish cultural and academic materials
- to conduct cultural events open to all students at the Graduate Center
How are proposals evaluated?
Proposals are evaluated by the DSC Cultural Affairs Committee, formed by students registered in at least three (3) different programs at the Graduate Center.
What is the maximum amount awarded?
Grants in one Cultural Affairs Committee term do not exceed ten percent of the annual allocation to this line in the DSC budget. Funding is decided on a yearly basis. The 2008-2009 maximum award is $500. This is subject to year-by-year modification. The Committee decides how much money will be awarded to each applicant (if any) up to the maximum amount.
Events approved in the past
Some examples of the events supported through the DSC Cultural Affairs Grants are:
- Hybrido Magazine (students from Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian literature)
- First AELLA Conference on Latina and Latin American Women (Linguistics, Developmental Psychology, Anthropology, and Sociology)
- Conference: “Migration, Memory and Trace: Writing in French outside the Hexagon” by The French Forum (French Students)
- Silent film screening accompanied by live music played by students from DMA Program (organized by Math students)
Requirements
- All grant proposals MUST be received at least one (1) month before the event/publication date.
- All events must be publicized at least fourteen (14) days in advance in order for the event to be eligible to receive grants from the Cultural Affairs Committee.
- No grant monies shall be spent for alcohol or film rental
- The DSC Cultural Affairs grant is only open to events organized by students for events that are open to the participation of all GC students, and invitation to participate shall be made public (through fliers posted at the Grad Center, announcements in The Advocate, email to the GC community, etc.)
- Grant recipients must advertise DSC sponsorship (in part – or in whole) in flyers, ads, etc.
How to Apply
It is necessary to electronically submit a proposal at least one month prior to the date for which the event/ publication is scheduled. The proposal should have the following information (in ONE electronic document):
- Name of individuals/groups organizing the project/event
- Program(s) the organizers belong to (program, chartered org.)
- Title of the project
- Date of the event/ publication
- Purpose/Description of the project/event
- Mock flyer publicizing the event and sample copy of publication (if applicable)
- List of other sponsors of the event and amount and itemization of contribution
- Detailed budget, itemizing all projected expenses and how the DSC grant is going to be allocated, and any contributions form other entities.
- A clearly stated grant request amount from the DSC.
Please ELECTRONICALLY submit all proposals to the Co-Chair for Business Management of the DSC.
How to claim your funds
In order to receive funds, a proper Check Request must be submitted within one week of the event/publication date to the Co-Chair for Business. On the ORG REQUESTING line of the Check Request form, indicate CA GRANT and on the PURPOSE line indicate the name of event/project.
PLEASE NOTE: There is no guarantee that funding allocated to a specific initiative will be allocated at all or in the same amount the following year nor is there any guarantee of full or partial funding for any Cultural Affairs proposal. Organizers are encouraged to also look for sponsoring from additional sources. Students who have been awarded a Cultural Affairs Grant for a given event or publication cannot apply for a DSC Professional Development Grant.
