What is a Professional Development Grant?
It is a Doctoral Students Council initiative intended to support professional development and research activities organized by Graduate Center students. It is open to all GC students. The grants may fund a wide range of projects, including student-organized conferences, publications, and workshops on aspects of professional development. The purpose of this grant is to allow recipient(s):
- to publish academic materials
- to conduct conferences and professional development workshops/events open to all students at the Graduate Center
Who can apply for this grant?
Only Graduate Center Students:
- Individual students registered at the Graduate Center (whether you attend class at the GC or at another campus)
- Departmental organizations
- Student organizations chartered by the DSC
- Ad hoc groups of students who are registered at the Graduate Center
How are proposals evaluated?
Proposals are evaluated by the DSC Professional Development Committee, formed by registered students from at least three (3) different programs at the GC.
What is the purpose of these grants?
To allow the DSC grant recipient(s):
- to publish academic materials
- to conduct conferences and professional development workshops/events open to all students at the Graduate Center
What is the maximum amount awarded?
Each grant in one Professional Development Committee term may not exceed ten percent of the annual allocation to this line in the DSC budget. Funding is decided on a yearly basis. In the 2008-2009 budget year, this maximum amount is $600. This is subject to year-by-year modification. The Committee decides how much money will be awarded to each applicant (if any) up to the maximum amount.
What kinds of events might qualify?
- Workshops on aspects of professional development such as public speaking, teaching, resume writing, job searches, grant writing, etc…
- Conferences about student research in any field (sciences, engineering, business, humanities, social sciences)
- Publications of conference proceedings, student research activities, or research findings
Requirements
- All grant proposals MUST be received at least one (1) month before the event/publication date.
- All events must be publicized at least fourteen (14) days in advance in order for the event to be eligible to receive grants from the Professional Development Committee.
- No grant monies shall be spent on alcohol.
- The DSC Professional Development Grant is only open to events organized by students for events that are open to the participation of all GC students, and invitation to participate shall be made public (through fliers, in The Advocate, email to the GC community, etc.)
- The event must be advertised as sponsored (in part – or in whole) by the DSC (in the publication, in fliers, etc).
How to Apply
It is necessary to electronically submit a proposal at least one month prior to the date for which the event/ publication is scheduled. The proposal should have the following information (in ONE electronic document):
- Name of individuals/groups organizing the project/event
- Program(s) the organizers belong to (program, chartered org.)
- Title of the project
- Date of the event/ publication
- Purpose/Description of the project/event
- Mock flyer publicizing the event and sample copy of publication (if applicable)
- List of other sponsors of the event and amount and itemization of contribution
- Detailed budget, itemizing all projected expenses and how the DSC grant is going to be allocated, and any contributions form other entities.
- A clearly stated grant request amount from the DSC.
Please ELECTRONICALLY submit all proposals to the Co-Chair for Business Management of the DSC.
How to claim your funds
In order to receive funds, a proper Check Request must be submitted within one week of the event/publication date to the Co-Chair for Business. On the ORG REQUESTING line of the Check Request form, indicate PD GRANT and on the PURPOSE line indicate the name of event/project.
PLEASE NOTE: There is no guarantee that funding allocated to a specific initiative will be allocated at all or in the same amount the following year nor is there any guarantee of full or partial funding for any Cultural Affairs proposal. Organizers are encouraged to also look for sponsoring from additional sources. Students who have been awarded a Professional Development Grant for a given event or publication cannot apply for a DSC Cultural Affairs Grant.
