A. Coffee Hour - April 1
1.) Provisions--Moira said they ordered food from Javastop, coffee, caffeinated
and decaffeinated, hot water urn for tea, pastries...they are spending $400
which should serve about 100 people
2.) Publicity -- Celia is making posters, Paul is putting up posters
3.) Gimmicks -- maybe have a fake give away as an april fool's joke? free car?
free tuition?
* something obvious but paul will think about it and get back to us
* suggested starting a thread on the message board as a discussion item
* Sheryl, Moira, Camille said they would be helping out
during this time
* Envelope stuffing party will be happening at the same time
B. DSC Elections
1.) Envelope Stuffing Party
* There will be a raffle for a free ticket to a restaurant for 2 ($50 gift
certificate for one of three restaurants)
* Envelope stuffing party will start during the coffee hour then continue
after the coffee hour
2.) Ballot -- Carrie circulated the draft of the ballots; some discussion ensued
regarding nomination and write in procedure
3.) Schedule -- Carrie said the ballots would be sent out with a deadline of april
23, according to the constitution the voting should be closed by May 1
but she decided to close it a week earlier because the May double plenary
is on May 15 which isn't enough time to get the information organized,
and tabulated. Is 3 weeks enough time? Paul suggested we ask Tracy if she
can help with this, Paul will email Tracy to ask for help starting around the
23rd after student affairs has tabulated the votes
C. Health Survey (Sheryl)
Sheryl said there is no information available at this time because the
ballots weren't available
IV. New Business
A. COCAL conference (Carrie)
PSC and the Adjunct Project is interested in this conference, which is a gathering
of North American activists. Carrie is making a request to give money to Heather
Gautney to go to this conference. There was a unanimous vote to give Heather
$500 to attend the conference, with a report to follow.
B. Political Science Department EO (Carrie)
A memo from the Carolyn Fisher to provost William Kelly was included in this
discussion regarding a situation in the political science department. The steering
committee unanimously agreed that we should involve ourselves with this issue.
C. DSC Message Boards (camille)
A general message board and student classified ad board will be available soon on
the website.
D. Request to Steering Committee Discretionary Funds (Jose)
Can we cover the overage on the Love and Labor party for Dominick Wetzel?
DSC was concerned about the under-funding from the PSC and wanted him to
seek additional funds from the PSC. If they don't or can't fund him, he can
resubmit a request to the DSC.
E. Brainstorm Budget Ideas (Jose)
What do we do about next year?
What is going to happen with the health insurance?
Will it be mandatory? Jose doesn’t know if this will go through.
Two big things the DSC funds includes the wellness center and travel &
research. Jose thinks that one will have to be dropped with the way the budget
stands.
