5489 - Health Issues Committee
Health Issues Committee Meeting
Friday, October 20th, 2006
Room 5495
Members Present: Chair, Ericka Calton; Lee Hachadoorian, Chong Wojtkowski,
Charles Lieberman, Lynda Kennedy.
Meeting Called to order at 5:10pm.
I. Recap of meeting with Student Affairs. Ericka informed the
committee of her recent meeting with Elise Perram. The
administration has set psychological counseling as a priority for GC
students.
II. Health Insurance. The administration has decided to take the
“mandatory health insurance” plan off the bargaining table. Rather,
the administration bargained for a plan that would cost 1,500$ a
year for students, cheaper than the current G.H.I. plan. Charles
suggested that students be able to use the CUNY plan in place for
employees of CUNY since most graduate students teach. This
might help get the enrollment numbers up.
a. Ericka reported about the science students, who currently
receive health insurance through the National Institute of
Health through a local hospital. Chong reported that the
administration’s goal is to provide all students with the types of
plans students in the sciences currently receive.
b. Lee added that we need to be specific about why we think the
Graduate Center should fight for health insurance.
III. The Wellness Center Lynda made a point about increasing student
awareness about the Wellness Center and the services it offers.
We should do a public awareness campaign which includes telling
students about the Baruch gym as well as the various workshops
the wellness center offers.
a. Health Fair. We are looking for ideas for a graduate student-
appropriate Health Fair. Committee members suggested ideas
like massages, health shakes, self-defense classes, or discount
memberships to health clubs.
IV. The meeting was adjourned at 5:50pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Chong Wojtkowski
